Sweet scent of security:
Have you ever thought about what it would be like if you had to have one odor for everything? You open your dryer with all the dry clothes inside and instead of smelling your fabric softener you smell the “new car” smell. Let’s say your mother is baking sugar cookies and instead of smelling the sweet, sensuous, and luscious smell of cookies, you smell your brothers dirty gym socks. Not a very good thought, is it?
At first when my mom told me that we were going to California for the Christmas break, I was more than furious. Did she actually think that I would be dragged along? Of course, she’s my mother! I had plans over Christmas break. I was not intending to be stuck with my family droning on about the “old days”. My holiday plans were to go to my friends party which was supposed to be the biggest party of the year. Instead I got stuck listening to Elvis Presley for five hours.

California just a few days before Hurricane Juliette was about to hit the coast. That night I was listening to the radio, drowning out the sound of my sister go on and on about her boyfriend, when I heard that Hurricane Juliette was going to come in a few hours. I jumped up from my bed and told my mom the bad news.
I had never been so scared in my life. The only thing that kept on popping into my head was that I am going to drown. For the next few hours, the only thing I could think about was the scent of my father’s cologne and how I had my face buried in his chest trying to feel as safe as I could.
When we arrived back in Utah, I figured out that I did not miss much while I was gone. My friends party was a total backfire and only twenty people showed up. I’m glad I got my vacation.

Now that I look back on it the one thing that got me through that night was the scent of my father’s cologne. Since then, every time I smell that same cologne I feel a sense of security wash over me and I forget all my troubles.
