It was a tradition to wear masks to such affairs and to reveal real identities at the end of the evening.
Lord Capulet sends his servant to invite the guests to the ball, but the servant can't read the names so he asks Romeo for help. When Romeo and his friends learn about the ball, they decide to attend, because, wearing masks they can avoid being recognized. At the end of the evening, he spies Juliet and, well you know the rest.

the pary was a masquerade party feast thing. it was out in there to show romeo and juliet have love at literally "first sight" of their faces.
