This is a poor method by todays standard because it is hard to quantitate.

TLC is a separation of molecules across a plate (often coated with silica). Separation occurs by polarity, and is carried across the plate by means of a solvent (ie cyclohexane, acetone) then the plate can be process by exposing the plate to a developing substance (I use 50% H2SO4) and cooked with heat to develope the plate and visualize the segregated molecules.
