The concept and dream of personal freedom. People simply do not have the range of choices to make in their lives. While it is true that people are free to immigrate into European countries, immigrants simply have poor educations and are not equipped to become literate in a second culture. There will always be menial work for those who use their strength or their physical prowess, but those jobs will never pay well. Many occupations are learned by apprenticeships and years of training. Those jobs pay well, but they require the ability to read, write and follow directions. Ethnic backgrounds and religions still play a big part in social acceptance in Europe, and enmities centuries old do not die out and go away. America is a young country and the social biases are not nearly as deep and ingrained in the fabric of this society.
No society will ever allow the free transfer of material things to people who cannot and will not work to earn them. Cars, nice clothes and places to live will always be doled out based upon the ability to pay. America still offers hope to people who cannot dream of what life could be if there were open opportunities. It remains one of the facts of life in America.
If you are willing to learn, you can rise to a higher standard of living. If that does not appeal to you, then you can remain without a dream of a better life in Europe.
No one should kid themselves! There are homeless people in Paris and Marseilles and Nice. The dimensions of poverty do not improve when the climate is better. Hungry is still hungry and dirty is still dirty on the French Riviera.

A lot of them were religious freaks who couldn't make it in Europe. As always, they had crazy ideas about the future and thought they could make America into some dreamland. However they were upset when they got there and decided to kill every Indian in their way. The same old thing is happening now. You've got Bush and his supporters imagining some fairyland future that requires the death of all people that don't think American. Luckily amongst the freaks some normal people came along too. Most of them went to Canada though.

religious freedom, cheap land(in some countries rent was very high, but in America they could be land owners for even less than what they were paying to live on somebody else's property), the ability to start their life fresh and not to be judged

Would you move to free and open lands?
They were sold on the idea, of a fertial land rich with gold. They would own anyland that they landed on, and some kings let them practice limited freedom if they claimed land for the empire.

They wanted their women to start shaving. Also they wanted lower taxes, and a decent machaca burrito.
