Before you do the following steps I'm about to give you be sure to back up everything that you can (i.e. music, pictures, videos, important Word document). After doing that do the following steps:
Remove all external peripherals that are not required to operate the system. This may include, but is not limited to:
Network cable
Modem cable
Printers
Scanners
External drives
Third-party devices
If the mouse and/or keyboard is USB and a PS/2 keyboard or mouse is available, use the PS/2 device(s). [If you don't know what a USB or PS/2 plug & cable looks like I've included pictures to help you.]

Section 1: If your system was shipped before 18 Oct. 2005 in the Americas, or before 18 Feb. 2006 in all other regions do the following: (If not skip to Section 2)
Now that you’re ready to do a restore of the operating system using PC Restore, perform the following steps:
*******NOTE: Dell PC Restore by Symantec is available on Dimension and Inspiron systems that shipped on or after 7/16/2004 in the Americas and 8/30/2004 in Europe.*******
1. Power the computer on.
2. When the Dell screen appears press and hold the key on the keyboard, press the key, then release them both at the same time. (The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.)
*******NOTE: Press the keys one time only. If you press them more than once, a keyboard error occurs and the process has to be initiated again.*******
3. Click the Restore button or press the key to highlight Restore and press the key. (A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.)
4. Click the Confirm button or press the key to highlight Confirm and press the key.
The Progress window appears.
Once the process is begun, Dell PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
When the restore is complete, the message "The system recovery process was successful appears."
5. Click the Finish button or press the key to highlight Finish and press the key. (The computer will restart. Your software is now as it was when you first received your computer.)
*******NOTE: After the Operating System has been restored, it is important to run Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) as soon as possible, to bring the system to the latest level of security.*******
Section 2: If the system was shipped on or after 18 Oct. 2005 in the Americas, or 18 Feb. 2006 in all other regions: (If not scroll up to Section 1)
Now that you’re ready to do a restore of the operating system using PC Restore, perform the following steps:
NOTE: Norton Ghost is available on Dell Dimension™ and Inspiron™ systems that shipped on or after Oct. 18, 2005 in the Americas.
1. Power the computer on.
2. When the Dell screen appears, press and hold the key on the keyboard, press the key, then release them both at the same time. (The Starting Symantec|Dell Recovery Environment screen appears.)
*******NOTE: Press the keys one time only. If you press them more than once, a keyboard error occurs, and the above steps have to be repeated.*******
When the End User License Agreement appears, click the Accept button or press the key to indicate that you accept the End User License Agreement. The Symantec Recovery Disk window appears.
- If you want to restore your computer to a backup you created, click Recover My Computer and perform the following steps:
1.) In the Select Recovery Point window, select the backup you want to restore to and click Recover My Computer.
2.) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery process.
- If you want to restore your computer to the original Dell configuration, click Recover My Computer to Original Dell Configuration and perform the following steps:
1.) In the Recover My Computer Wizard window, click Yes or press the key, and press . (A second Recover My Computer Wizard dialog box appears.)
2.) Click Yes or press the key, and press to start the recovery process. (The Ghost32 window appears. Once the process begins, it usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete. When the restore is complete, the system restarts. Your software is now as it was when you first received your computer.)

You mean Reload.Depending on how old the machine is, most machines running Windows XP have a hidden partition. You can access it by hitting crtl F11 as soon as you see the system restarting. Otherwise, you will need a install disk if your going to erase everything and restore it back to factory settings.

Did you mean reformat? Cuz, that would wipe your entire hard drive. If you don't have any recovery disks, I don't recommend doing this at all. You might try & save everything onto a CD that you need to keep (word docs, music files, etc), but as for programs like Word, Excel, Windows, etc...you need to have the recovery disks for.
