Distribute the 2 on the left side and the 4 on the right side
2x + 4 = 4x - 4 + 4
Combine like terms
2x + 4 = 4x
Subtract 2x from each side
4 = 2x
Divide both sides by 2
2 = x
Answer: x = 2
Don't forget that you can easily check your answer by replacing x with 2 and see if the equation is true.

If you are short on time, then do what I used to do in school. X is usually a 1, 2 or 3 but mostly 1, then sometimes 2 and rarely 3. So I plugged a 1 into the x in the problem and see if it worked. If it doesn't I try #2. (this time it worked). Not really the right way to go about it, but when push comes to shove, it generally works.

2(x+2) = 4(x-1) + 4
2x +4 = 4x -4 + 4
2x -4x = -4 +4 - 4
-2x = -4
x = -4/-2
x = 2

Multiply through the parentheses:

2x + 4 = 4x - 4 + 4

Combine like terms:

4x - 2x = 4

2x = 4

x = 2
