I would recommend self-publishing. I self-published a book of poetry through http://www.lulu.com/ (you don’t need an agent for self-publishing)
Lulu is completely free and very easy to use. You can then buy a global distribution, or ISBN, which will put your book on Barnes and noble, borders, Amazon.... I really like lulu, I think they are great. They also offer a great customer service if you get stuck. Once published with them, you automatically get the copyright, and you keep all rights to it. You can have books printed in b/w or colour, hardback or soft back, and in a variety of sizes.
If you think they are too good to be true (which was my original opinion) you can view my book at http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
Hope this helps. Good luck with your writing.
For any more information about Lulu you can contact me at forensic_dreamer@hotmail.com (if you do contact me, put Lulu in the subject line, or I might report as Spam)
Cheers, Deanna.

I'm going through this right now, too.
Go to your library and find their most recent copy of the "Writer's Market." It has names and addresses of just about every magazine in the US, as well as some in Canada and the UK. It will also tell you what sorts of stories these mags will publish, whether you need an agent to submit, and how much money, if any, the mags pay. You may have to go to a magazine's web site to see their submission guidelines (hint: most will want your work typed double-spaced, with cover page, and a self-addressed stamped envelope). Then send out your story to as many places as you can, and -don't- get discouraged if they reject it--just keep trying. And if an editor offers suggestions for improvement, listen to them...we all have things to learn. Good luck.

Well, there are vanity publishers that will publish your book for a cost.
If you want to be paid for your work, you have a hard row. Google for publishers looking for authors and send copies--at least the first chapter--if the publisher is asking.
You probably will get many rejection slips. I have known authors who have had a hundred rejections before a publisher took a chance on their first book. William Least Heat-Moon, author of BLUE HIGHWAYS and several others, is one. Robert Persig author of ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE is another.

YOu need to contact a magazine that might be intersted in your story.

Get to the book "Writer's Handbook", look up the names of magazines that might be interested in your submission and send it off to them.

depending on what it is, a more selecting magazine might be more helpful

Write query letters to publications you think may be interested and wait patiently for replies.
