about 48-72 hours, you can slow the process by wiping the pumpkin down w/clorox bleach before carving then afterward putting a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the cut areas to help hold in the moisture. my sons pumpkin is 9 days old today and looks like he was freshly carved.

Depending on where you keep the pumpkin it can start rotting in a day. If you have it in doors near a heater or in warm room like kitchen, that speeds up the ripening time. Most pumpkins don't rot completely at once but start off with little spots here and there. If it doesn't ruin the design of the carving, cut that nick out and fill with Vaseline. It will make it last a little longer.

Well, if you cut it tomorrow morning and then take it inside after the last trick or treaters, you should cut the pumpkin into sections small enough to put into a pan, rind up, which you can microwave, you can get it to the point where you can get the rind off. I can't tell you how long you microwave it, just try.

Take what meat out of the you get, put it into a large pot with some, not all that much, water, molasses, cinnamon, and cook it down until it has the consistence of oat meal, and you can eat it. A normal sized pumpkin should make enough for you to bag and freeze it and you will be eating it all winter. It will taste something like a mashed potato casserole.

Why the devil most people throw away so much food bothers me.
