My friends tell me I shouldn't go to a community college to be a nurse because it takes alot of time there. They say why waste time doing math and long english essays when I can go to a private college just for nursing that can be completed in a short amount of time. What should I do?. Money is also a big issue for me, Which would save me more money or is it just about the same?

Since money is an issue, it should depend on what you get in financial aid and outside scholarships. Private schools tend to cost a lot of money which would translate into a large amount of loans if you do not receive enough in grants and scholarships. Nursing is one of the college majors that has a lot of loans available. An idea is to file for FAFSA.ed.gov, state grant, and private scholarships to see if how much you can get. I also recommend searching your state government's website for college grants. In addition, your college's financial aid and college major websites should list scholarships. Also, do a search on Google.com and Yahoo.com for any grants available to nursing students in your state. I will provide some free resources for grants and scholarships. However, it takes time to find out if you get any outside scholarships, so it is a good idea to target going to school in a year. If you can't get enough in financial aid for the private college program, go to the community college and get your associate's degree then you could transfer to the private college after you get your RN license and find work in a facility that will help with the tuition to complete your Bachelor's degree. My recommendation is to go for the college that would result in the least amount of college loans. Good luck!

It all depends on the type of degree you want. If you want a bachelor's (which I think you need anyway) you will probably want to start at a community college and get your G.E.s out of the way. Once those are done you can transfer (check with both schools) from your community college into a nursing program at another school (private or state). My suggestion is to do research and see which school you want to go to (state is ALWAYS going to be cheaper than private) and then look at the community colleges are the area. If you really want to be a nurse and not just an office assistant type thing you are going to need more than just a short amount of time.

Community College is a lot more cheaper and you'll have to do general education along with your nurse classes to meet the graduation requirements. A private school or trading school will give you a better education and training directly focus for nursing.

You get what you pay for. If you can save up for the private school, I'd go that road.

It depends on the particular schools you are looking at. Private schools are VERY expensive, and for the most part you will still have to take core classes (math, science, english, etc.) along with your nursing classes. I would suggest a career school that specializes in nursing and related fields. They are similar to community colleges in price. Keep in mind almost every accredited school will require you to have a course load of broad classes that don't pertain to your major, so go with the cheaper option that appeals to you the most!

P.S. Check out college search websites and fill out their college match searches to look at schools that will fit YOU. Good luck!

Private college is obviously going to be much more expensive than a regular community college, but that's because you get the better quality education. Duh. This is a problem since you say money's tight, but you can always get loans.

A community college will be cheaper. But have you explored all financial aid options? It depends on what you want.
