My dress has a black and silver bodice and a black tulle "poofy" bottom and I was thinking a smoky-eye, but would it be overkill to use a black, gray, and white palette? I was thinking of working with the Max Factor HIP eyeshadow 3-some, but I'm not sure exactly how to coordinate the colors so any additional help on that would be great!

i think if your dress is complicated or even just very pretty- you should go as natural as possible with the makeup. you don't want to over kill it-that could look really awful.

I have a friend that used the Max Factor three some and it looked awful. It looked like she was using the product just because it was advertised, not because it looked good on her.
Gold eyeshadow is AMAZING. On any complexion. You could even use the silver to highlight your brow bone. Also, a little red blended in the crease above the lid is always subtley gorgeous.
And the smokey eye is always classic.
Also, make-up matching your outfit has said to be a bit on the tacky side. If you practice your makeup before the ball you'll know just what you like and don't like, so you'll be sure to have a great evening and not worry about whether or not your face is a mess.

Keep in mind: This isn't difficult to do, but it does take pactice. Try it out a few times before to get the look you want.

1. Put loose powder under your eyes to catch any darker eyeshadow that may fall. You can brush the powder away after you complete your makeup, and voila, no dark marks left on your face to ruin your look!

2. Using the darkest shade, place that color in a sweep from the inner corner of you eye to the outer corner closest to your lash line. Clean your brush/applicator by swirling/wiping it on a dark color wash cloth.

3. Blend the mid-color shade to the edge of the darkest color up to the inside of the bone of your eye socket. Beyond this area is considered the brow bone (the area that sticks out a little) and that's where your lightest shade will go to highlight your brow bone. Clean your brush/applicator repeating the process above.

4. Apply the lightest shade to your brow bone, repeating the blending step where the mid shade meets the lightest shade.

5. Step back to see if any more blending is needed.

6. Apply mascara and/or eyeliner to upper lashes. Mascara on lower lashes is optional.

7. Brush away the loose powder.

Good luck!

Since you have a dark dress and it is a formal ball, not a night on the town. Think Audrey Hepburn. Line the top of your lashes with a black liquid eye liner, do mascara, but all else is subtle and natural looking. Besides it's much easier to drink and eat food when you are wearing natural lips and do not have to worry about getting lipstick on your teeth or having it flake.
