Republicans want to help poor people by helping everyone help themselves (grants, tax cuts, work programs). They generally oppose abortion, tax increases, and welfare programs. Tougher on crime, and stronger on national defense.

Democrats want to help the poor by giving them handouts, and never treating the real problem (welfare, tax increases, increasing government involvement in business). They are pro-abortion, and believe the government should be larger and punish businesses for being more successful. Essentially democrats want to even the playing field by bringing everyone down, instead of encouraging everyone to do better. They do not encourage individual success, otherwise they would not get any more votes.
