It means Laugh Out Loud. Other common ones are IMHO (in my honest opinion), BRB (be right back) and LMAO (another laughing one that I'll leave you to guess). There are many more but they're the only ones I can think of.

lol is commonly defined as laugh out loud. it is used when there is a joke or just about anywhere. kinda like if in real life during an awkward moment.

LOL also applies to most places on the internet.
It is generally accepted that it means laugh out loud.
Please, don't say it every other sentence, it is as bad as a valley girl's "like, that's like so like totally like AWESOME!" It really gets annoying.
Especially try to keep it to a minimum on forums, you will get flamed.
