The term "ground zero" was actually a term first thought of in WWII after the japanese bomb dropping, it's the spot on ground right underneith a bomb's explosion. It's now described as a groundpoint center of a massive/damaging destruction. Thus, after the attacks of the world trade centers on 9/11, they instantly referred to the aftermath as "groundzero". If you think about it it makes sense too. There was a huge destruction of which a horrible even took place and the leftover was at ground level, no height left-zero.
