I thought maybe thermostat was stuck but a new one does the same thing. I removed the thermostat and works ok without it. But now it takes so long to warm up and get heat in the morning. What would cause an engine to suddenly begin producing more heat like this? Coolant is pumping and circulating fine.

There is no evidence of bad head gasket- no leaks, no coolant in oil or vice versa, no coolant out of exhaust.

It can depend a lot of how new or old the car is.. but getting to an overheating problem can be easy or very hard.. The fans could be an issue too.. sometimes there are two fans... one usually is on w/ the car reaches a certain temp... both should be on if you have the A/C on... you should check for leaks on the hoses or radiator... from there i would check around the Water pump, even that the coolant is circulating doesnt mean that there's not a leak in the gasket for the water pump... thats where i would start first.. also if it's still overheating w/ a new thermostat... be sure its being placed correctly cause if it's upside down.. u would have a prob as well...

Oh sorry that may be a bad deal neon's are known for bad head gaskets and if the car leaks oil because of the head gaskets it could cause the car to over heat. Get it checked soon and don't drive it, check the oil. You may have to have the head gaskets shaved or buy new one's but honestly do this and sell the car as is cuz this will not fix it for long. Especially if the car is in the mid to early 90's range

Frist, how new is the coolant mix? MIX right? When was the system flushed last? Do the electric fans kick in? Or is your fan engine driven? Make sure there is nothing blocking the front of the raditor. As for the thermost, it is a nessary part of the system. It keeps the water in the raditor to cool it down. I would put it back in. You can check to see if it is working by boiling it in a pan of water. If it opens , it works. Does the water level stay up? You are not loosing water anywhere? Hoe does the car run otherwise? plenty of power?
Let us know how it go`s.
