a 50/50 mix of perennial fescue and annual rye is a good start. The annual rye grows quick and breaks the dirt for the fescue. The fescue grows long and lean and comes back every year.

Don't Fertilize until AFTER you are able to cut the grass once.

BUT, see the website below for more particulars for where you will be planting the grass - shade, sunny, under trees, etc. I used to live in Western KY, along the KY/TN border, about an hour from Nashville, and the 50/50 fescue/rye worked WONDERFUL both in spring and fall. I had a GREAT yard after just two seasons of doing this.

BERMUDA grass is the thick and tangly stuff that creeps on the ground - you do NOT want that. Fescue and rye grow long, lean and tall - that is what you want.

It's hard to sow a yard in november in tennessee because of probable frost. If you want to see some green during the fall and winter months sow some millet and winter rye grass. However, this will die off in the Spring. your best bet for that area would be a tall fescue called "Kentucky 31". It is drought resistant, releatively inexpensive and pretty easy to grow. Sow it in March or April after the last frost. If you have any questions email me at boymusic1@yahoo.com and I will be more than happy to answer. Good luck

Marshall Rye would be a good choice to get you through the winter in TN. In the early spring follow it up with bermuda. Be sure to put out a little 13-13-13 with the rye. The bermuda will thank you about June.
