No matter how much i try to think of nice things, or count sheep, empty my mind or whatever, it's usually all the bad stuff that springs into my mind; i.e all my problems etc etc. Then it takes me forever to get to sleep.
If all that goes on too long, i get up and make a cuppa and take it back to bed and read until i can't keep awake any longer.
It's really horrible when you can't get to sleep, and on occassions it has reduced me to tears. I don't understand why it is that when you are so tired why you can't just 'drop off'!
Perhaps i ought to take up drinking more often....but then i'd probably be cuddlying the toilet all night!

Sleep Tips
Because so many people get insomnia, there has been a lot of research done on how to beat it. Lucky for you, right? Not all of these tips work for everyone, but one or two might help you.
Write in a journal before you go to bed. This practice clears your mind so you won't have all those thoughts crowding your brain when you're trying to sleep.
Sleep in a dark, comfortable room. Light signals your body that it's time to be awake, so you want to avoid it at night. But if you are really afraid of the dark, it's OK to try a dim night-light. And being hot and sweaty or shivering from the cold can easily keep you up.
Don't sleep with a pet. This can be a tough habit to break, but your lovable dog or cat could be keeping you awake. As your pet cozies up to you or makes noise, it could wake you from a peaceful sleep. Try sleeping without your pet for a couple nights to see if you sleep better that way.
Don't drink any caffeinated beverages (like soda or iced tea) after about 3:00 in the afternoon. Caffeine is a stimulant and might keep you awake.
Don't exercise at night. Keep your exercise to earlier in the day - never within a couple hours of when you go to sleep.
Once you're lying in bed, try a peaceful mind exercise. For instance, count backward from 100 with your eyes closed. By the time you get to 10 (yawn) we hope you'll feel very sleepy. And by 5, we hope you'll feel yourself drifting off ...

Do anything to get my mind off the fact that sleep isn't happening. Start by deep breath relaxation when you inhale filling your lungs as much as you can then use stomach muscles to take in more air, and as slowly exhale mentally say relax stomach, relax lungs. Do this twice or three times, then start to think of person of opposite sex you like to make it with, or same if that's your thing. In the unlikely event you still find you self glancing at clock saying got to get to sleep, then get up and read awile and try again. Would love to joke but don't want to hex myself tonight. Try to dream up jokes or maybe different story line for what you reading. Hope you find cycle that works best, and avoid liquids and food that might make it harder to relax and forget about your body. Arranging the best sleeping environment before getting into bed also helps.

When I can't sleep I think about what's going to happen as a result I didn't get sleep so I'm going to be tired and space out a lot. I worry about things I will need to concentrate on.

I think about anything - how my life is going, what I have to do, etc etc. But, I mostly make a conscious effort to empty my mind of everything that's running through it so I can get to sleep faster[helps a lottt].

Clear your mind the more you think whilst you try to go to sleep the longer it takes, either that or think of how many answers you have had to this question.

my teacher said that when we can't sleep at night, it's maybe because our mind are still not relaxing. thus, he suggested to think of something calm and peaceful in order to release the tension in my mind during the day. and i did so, (i imagine of a waterfall) and i found out that i wake up refreshed every morning!

I always think of this really great looking girl I dated years ago who was dumb as a stick and lousy in bed. Makes me nod right off.
