The reason is to "motivate" the homeowner to give a "treat", and, if they don't, there will be a "trick" pulled on them. So, give me a treat or I will pull a trick on your.

The child was suppose to do the trick. If it was good then they got a treat . If you didn't like it and didn't give a treat then chances are you would get a bad trick done on your house later in the night.

I think it's just tradition now, but originally it would have meant "you have a choice, give me a treat or I will give you a nasty trick." It would be fun to turn it around and play tricks on any unsuspecting youngster who comes to your door looking for treats!

Maybe the trick is for the costumes they wear like tricking you or something like that. Though they look adorable!!! =)

Trick is when you yell "Omigosh! A bird just flew into your house! It's gonna crash!" They turn around and you jack the bowl of delicious candy and run.

What they are saying is "give us a treat or WE will play a trick." For example, for the crustaceonous losers who don't hand out candy...I tampoon their house. :-) (cover in tampons)
