the playing of dodge ball was not removed from all schools in the US. and Yes it was because their feelings were being hurt.
People think that children must be protected from any type of physical harm, even a skinned knee so they used that as the excuse. (this causes children to be afraid of every little thing)
But if you followed the news reports and interviews that were being done, you would have heard those people in favor of removing it say that because children were getting picked last and were humiliated at having been hit out. that this game was detrimental to their self esteem.
We are raising a generation of wimps and whiners. that do not know how to compete in the real world.
Getting a bruise or scrapped leg will not destroy a child (it will make them emotionally stronger if left to stand on their own) unless we continue to coddle and sympathize with their hurt feelings.

When I was young, kids used to pop the soft dodge balls so that we would have to play dodge balls with basketballs. The result was bleeding children in pain and fear because some of the less adjusted children took out all their aggression on the game.

I don't think it was losing that was the problem there, the game just teaches the wrong things to children. It isn't really a sport, more like a combat activity.
