I went there on Halloween my senior year in high school and had fun. They have a wax museum, a beer factory, lots of reinactments of the witch trials and haunted houses, not to mention fortune tellers and great seafood.

I agree that it's overrated. The Witch Museums are overly touristy and there are tons of tourist stores and stuff downtown. However, the Peabody-Essex Museum is actually under-appreciated. That's the one thing in Salem that's worth seeing. There are a couple of other interesting things too like the House of Seven Gables and some maritime museums. And Salem actually DOES have some excellent reastaurants, particularly for seafood, and it's only a short commuter rail drive from Boston. In general, though, it is overrated. If you're in Boston for a short time only and want to see a quaint New England fishing village, and you're going north, keep going past Salem to Rockport and/or Ipswich. (Still within an hour of Boston - maybe a little more but an easy day trip).

Been there once, about ten years ago.
It's a suburb of Boston, kind of urban but with some degree of charm.
We went because we're Witches and Salem is well known for tolerance toward our faith. We were actually somewhat disappointed as the Witch shops were all pretty much the same and very few of the local Witches seemed interested in visitors to their city.
On a positive note, there were some excellent places to eat & drink and they have a "downtown" pedestrian mall that's pretty cool.
I hear it gets REALLY crowded around Samhain (Halloween).

It's a cool little town and fun to visit for a day, but I think it's overrated.
The witch trial stuff could have been presented alot better, in my opinion. And once you get beyond that, there are plenty of modern day witches that call it their home.... which seems odd because the reason that town became known was for FALSELY accusing people of being witches.... and it was one of many towns that killed people for this. So it seems they are using the "witch city" hype to attract tourists (and therefore money) just for practicing witchcraft.
There are lots of towns in this area that are just as fascinating and have plenty of history. There are lots of cool places where you won't get sucked into a tourist trap. If you're looking for ghosts and spirits, check out dogtown and the town of Dana, MA... or read about (not sure if they give tours) the Danvers Asylum.

Yes, I went on a school field trip three years ago. It was pretty fun. We went to the Witch museums and stuff and the cemetary that is around there with all of the people that died.

It's a good trip that is both educational, but fun as well. Also, lots of nice shops and restaurants in the general area. Especially good on Halloween!
