It used to be (in the days of a 11 game regular season) that you needed a winning record (at least 6-5) to be bowl eligible. Now that they play 12 regular season games, is a 6-6 team bowl eligible or do they have to get to at least 7-5?

In order to be bowl eligible, a team must have at least six wins and more wins than losses, including conference and out-of-conference games, and the team must not be on probation. The NCAA allows one victory per season over a Division I-AA team to count toward a Division I-A team's bowl eligibility.

On April 26, 2006, the NCAA announced that they were relaxing the rules for eligibility starting with the 2006 season, particularly in light of the new 12 game college football season. Now, teams with .500 records can qualify for bowl games if their conference has a contract with a bowl game. Also, teams with .500 records (e.g. 6-6) could earn bowl bids if all other Division I-A teams with winning records have been taken and postseason spots still remain vacant.

A team only has to win 6 games to be bowl eligible.

No. 6-6 will get you bowl eligible. There are enough bowls to go around now so that 6-6 or better teams wouldn't be left at home because of strength of schedule or something....

For now a .500 team can make a bowl game, i believe soon that will change. Within the next few years it will move to 7-5, while I want them to go to a playoff system I believe at the minimum they should abolish some of the lesser bowls that take teams that are bottom of the barell for a bowl bid. Teams that are .500 or barely above should not be rewarded for mediocrity.

you can be 6-6 and make a bowl game. which i think sucks because there are teams in smaller conferences like the WAC, Mountain West, C-USA that can go 9-3 or 8-4 and not make a bowl game.
