Yes the ps3 will be able to play ps2 games. That was a promise from sony. Millions of people have ps2 games.

The magazines said that ps3 will be able to play most of the ps2 and ps1 games i think that will be good cause my ps2 can't read any of the blue disked games which totally sucks cause most of my good games are blue!!

basically been covered. but yes it will play playstation 2 games, i beleive playstation games as well. however it imght be different then how we currently know. for instance i remember reading something along the liens of downloads i dunno for sure about that though.
