The British had assigned Hessian troops to fight Washington's troops in Trenton, N.J. Washington had reinfoceded army troops and launched a three column attack on the Hessians. Troops were ferried across the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776. The troops silently marched toward Trenton and overtook the Hessians by surprise. Over 1,000 prisoners were captured. Washington marched south, then east around Corwallis during the night of January 2, 1777. He won a brilliant victory at Princeton, defeating the redcoats marching to join Cornwallis. After the victory, Washington marched eastward to Morristown where his men spent the rest of the winter. The objective: To defeat Cornwallis and the British troops from taking over N.J. The patriots crushed the Hessians in a surprise assult thus forcing Cornwallis to surrend his army.

it was a major battle for the Americans because had the British taken over Trenton that would be a turning point in war.Trenton was small at the time but the British had to seize every thing in the war.The objective of the Battle of Trenton was mainly to defend it long enough for the re enforcements to arrive.

To keep Washington's army together, it was ready to fall apart, and to score a victory, Washington was on an incredible losing streak, but in terms of tactics, it was to destroy the Hessian Garrison that was stationed there.
