The 2 main holidays/vacation times are December and July. The school year starts around about the 17th of January usually and runs till lets say the 4th of December. In between there are other holidays as well seeing as there are 4 terms in the school year. Depending on what school you go to or what your religion is, depends on when the other holidays will be. The July and December holidays are usually each about a month long. Also during the course of the year we had numerous public holidays (almost the country with the most) which you might want to add into your assignment:) Please note, most of the information i have provided is based on my own schooling experience in a private school...the public schools may differ a little bit. Good luck with the paper;)

In South Africa schools usually begin in the 3rd week of January and end in the 1st week of December every year. The period between Dec-week-1 and Jan-week-3 is the South African summer vacation. The winter vacation is between mid-June and mid-July.

Depends on if its a private school or a public school. Some private schools have three terms-where school starts in January and end in November but during the year(around April/May) they get a full month off school.
For public schools it depends on which province you live in.If its coastal or inland.School might start on different days for these two regions but it is always in the same month i.e.Mid-January til March(Term 1), Mid-April til June (Term2), Mid-July til September(Term 3), Mid-September til November (Term 4).
NB! As you can see public schools always have 4 terms.
The longest of their holidays, besides the Christmas holidays, is the June holidays.
Hope this is helpful.

we work very differently to the american system. School starts in january (around the 20th) and breaks for 3 weeks in march (from 23march - 13 april). Goes back in april and breaks for a month in june/july (22 june - 10 july). Goes back on the 11 july and breaks for 1 week in september (21 - 28 sep)... then its last term will all the exams and school breaks up for the year around the 7th december. These dates are for 2007. :-)

School normally starts in January and ends in December, which by the way is our summer time, so it qualifies as a summer holiday. Sumemr lasts till about end February here.
Does that help?
Thanks for my 2points!
