Well, when my boys were young, I started them on a Lionel train set... There are all different scales and models and you can start with an engine and a little track. It's a fabulous hobby. If you don't have a lot of room, you can get the little N scale trains that you can put in a glasstop coffee table.

The kids used to spend hours and hours on their trains - and collected cars, and scenery for years.... great hobby that isn't sitting in front of the boob tube or using a 'controller'......and people collect through adult life. I think 8 is a great age to start.

How about a scarf? Even if you haven't ever knit anything before, knitting is really easy to learn and one of the fastest ways to learn is a single-skein scarf - knit one row, purl one row, all the way to the end. A handmade gift, from the heart, that only costs the price of the skein you choose - anywhere from 5-7 dollars at Wal Mart. Merry Christmas!

Depends on your budget, really. Lego's always a hit. Scalextric sets are good for a laugh, and if he really gets into it you've solved present dilemmas for the next few years, as you can get infinite amounts of add ons, cars etc for it. If you really want to push the boat out, how about a Roboraptor? They're expensive, but my god are they fun!
