Yes. You can have Dollar A/C with a UK Bank and they will issue you with a Dollar Cheque Book. I do it all the time.

By UK cheque, are you referring to sending a check to the UK?

If that's the question I would say sure.

By UK cheque, are you referring to sending a check drawn against a UK bank?

If that's the question I would GUESS no.

In either scenario, you would need to calculate for the exchange rate if you were purchasing something.

If you don't have a currency converter, do a Google search and you will find several sites that are either free or close to it. That will at least give you a range. The only way to know for sure what the exchange rate will be is talk to your bank. If fluxuates throughout the day and you wouldn't want to depend upon the "word" of a web site that is 2 days behind the times.

Absolutely not. I work in Treasury for the biggest Dollar clearer globally and unless you open a $ account with your UK bank or want the receiver of your check / cheque to suffer an FX ( foreign exchange ) charge, send a wire ( SWIFT ) payment to your corespondent / reciever to make sure they get the correct amount ( but this will be expensive to you , around 15 pounds to send )

You would need to check with your bank. But you could also agree a price in sterling and send it for that amount!
