Some old fashion doctors are a stickler for the rectal temperature. The rectal temperature is the most accurate -- it is at the core of the body and not influenced by out side agents -- oral temperature can be lowered by cold fluids or air intake [opening your mouth]. If you feel uncomfortable with a rectal temp being performed by your doctor -- you can perform the act yourself. Simply take the thermometer from her and say --It's okay I can do it myself. Or you can simply refuse. Also don't be ashamed to let your physician know that this is uncomfortable for you. During your next visit ask your doctor "For my own edification what is the difference between oral and rectal temp"

Hi Laura - this is NOT normal practice, esp not for a girl your age (Same age as me).

Most docs now use digital thermometers which they pop in your ear and make a little beep and gives a much more accurate read out.

If you feel uncomfortable, say no! You can do that. When I hurt my shoulder last year, the pains I was getting were (apparently) similar to if Id damaged nerves in my back and the doctor wanted to check something or other via my bum and I said no.

If she insists on doing it.....fart on her hand! Thatll learn her! ;O) Keep smiling xx

well each doctor has there own way of telling tempeture...and she is right the only accurate temp is by taking it rectally.....but I really dont think she should be checking it rectally unless there is a reason to...oral temp is just as affective in a doctors office.....hospitals dont even use rectal temps anymore unless they cant get a temp any other way or the patient is an infant....I personally would refuse a rectal temp reading.....she can get it fine through the mouth or with those ones they use on the ear.....there is no need to do a rectal for a regular exam.

I have to say this sounds highly suspect. I was in an intensive care unit after heart surgery about two years ago, and the thermometer in the ear was more than accurate enough for that which could have been a life-and-death situation.

Highly suspect motives from the doctor here. You must refuse this in future, and possible report your concerns if you feel there has been improper conduct.

No that is not normal at all. It sounds to me like you have a very old fashioned doctor. Ear and mouth thermometers are accurate enough. Other than children having it done I have never heard of that in my life. I would refuse to let her do it anymore. You have the right to decide what a doctor can or can not do to you in an exam. You have rights and you are the boss. People tend to forget that they are the ones paying the doctors paycheck. Just stand up for yourself.

This has been the normal way to check your temp in Europe for years. I lived in France for years and every doctor I ever saw did it like that. I do not think however that they still do it that way.
A rectal thermometer is a different shape to the oral thermometer
so if they still exist then they must still be used.

COME ON?!!! and you think this is normal?! what would you do if this doctor was "taking your child's temperature that way?! Would you still think that it is normal? There are a number of ways to take your temperature and yes rectal is very accurate, but so is in the ear, under your arm, in your mouth if you haven't had anything to drink.
CHANGE your doctor, she needs to be reported.

It is more accurate. However, the tempanic membrane of ear is also very accurate and easy takes seconds with one of those ear thermometers. Most doctors are going in this direction. I would think if you had a good doctor she would be open to oral temperatures. I would also think she might be losing patients because of this practice very uncomfortable to patients young and old, plus can be dangerous in children. Maybe she has some kind of kinky fetish and likes you.

NO WAY!!!! INSIST she does it under your arm or in your mouth.....sorry but she is WEIRD!!!

Just tell her you are not comfortable with it. If she says it's the only accurate way then tell her near enough will do!!

You should check with your local health board if there is a reason why a doctor would do this....it just sounds wrong.

You need to sort this out if only to prevent others putting up with it!!!

I think your doctor has an unhealthy obsession with your bottie, write to the general medical council and make a complaint.

Sounds like the kind of thing a doctor could get struck off for.
