It's not 1949, it's 1849. The California Gold Rush in 1849 turned San Francisco from a mostly empty town into a major city, full of what were called "49ers."

Somebody is pulling your leg. Gold was first found in California in 1849. ITs a historical reference to the miners who first prospected from Gold in the San francisco area.....The settlement of Yerba Buena with the gold rush boom became San Francisco...There were major earthquakes in the bay area in 1906 and 1989.....

Go back a little further in history to the goldrush days of 1849, San francisco became a city because of the goldrush hence the name which was given to the people of that time.
