Before you upgrade any of your system components, make sure its necessary and you have fulfilled necessary requirements that warrants such an upgrade. A computer of 849Mhz can support a RAM up to 512MB and more than. But your Operating System also matters, make sure you are running at least Windows 2000 and preferably XP.
Get to HP website(www.hp.com) and see if you can upgrade your PC. And the highest MB of RAM it can take, before you do anything.
But generally, you should be able to upgrade the RAM of your PC. Regarding to prices, it varies from one vendor to another. Most importantly, know the kind/type of RAM your PC is using.
Whether its a SDRAM, DDRRAM, or RAMBUS. That's why I told you to get to HP's site first, in case you dont know much about your system.

You don't say what your OS is. If you're running 98, your wasting your money because 98 does not manage memory well. You won't be able to run XP unless it's a pentium....
Look up the computer on line at HP - If you are running 2000 (I'm not sure if it requires a pentium, increasing ram would make a difference - but no matter what you do, you have a old computer in today's standards where 2 gig and Dual Core processors are becoming the standard. You'll still chug along.

First, you need to check to see If you have an available ram slot for expansion. If you do, then the next step is to order ram modules online.
Some trusted companies:
Crucial
Kingston
OCZ Technologies
Patriot
Mushkin
Most of these companies provide a ram module search feature on their website. You just type the name of your computer and model or choose from a list and they will search their own database to see if a compatible ram module is available.

Just buy a whole cheesecake from a cheesecake shop... eat the whole thing...pull your pants back up and slap a turkey. Then you will no longer feel the need for a better computer. x
