Mostly it is younger people that need to start off on some sort of middle ground. It is as if they were already talking to you. You must be from England to be able to notice that. Over here it is almost common place with our youth. My kids do the same thing.

I don't think it is just younger people that do this. It's a way of getting attention before you speak. You are saying "ok listen to me" then speak!

Why do you end all your statements with 'I think.'?
And read more questions if you feel this is a universal truth. You'll probably notice some people spell all their "to's" and "there's" wrong, but not all of us... no, not all of us, by far.

Not all Americans do this - mostly really young kids do. I think it is just a nervous thing.
