Some years ago when looming unemployment would be the downturn of every government Further and extended education became the banner to stand under for the government o of the day.

It took most of the newly educated young out of the employment market and placed them back into education. This resulted in a time lapse for the vacancies to become enough to cope with the vast amount of people that would have swollen the unemployment figures. It helped closing industries and the redundant also as they would be offered retraining schemes, yet again controlling those unemployment figures.

Now we find the cost of education has gone through the roof and to ask people to pay more and more for it is almost as bad as unemployment figures and what highly skilled or academic Posts are available for these intelligent people - probably less than before. So does National service look good - wonderful you can take people of unemployment, keep the prison figures down for young offenders at the same time - Next they will start charging people to do the compulsory National Service.............lol

Several years ago whilst still in opposition David Blunkett suggested something similar. The Tories said it wouldn't work.
I think they were wrong then and wrong now!

They should have supported it then as it was a good idea.
But now they are grasping for popular support.
They don't have a clue.

We have moved on since the days of conscription which was essentially to support the Cold War.

We do need some form of National Public Service but it needs much more investigation and discussion.

Actualy why don't politicians involve young people in that process?

Well to be honest i dont think it would be a bad thing these days. Crime has risen, unemployment has too. At least national service would make young men and women feel worth something instead of having no goal, or self esteem. It would give them a career. Just look around any City on a fri and sat night, surely u can see that half the lager louts out on the town would be better off in national service?

I'm sorry but when I see the local 16 year old chavscum breaking into cars, vandalising people's property, threatening people, drinking White Lightning down the park, "mouthing off" to policemen and the like I can't help thinking that National Service might not be a bad idea.

These little shites could really do with an injection of discipline. Its not as though they get it at home or at school

I don't think DC's idea of National Service is the same - he wants 'adulthood' classes instead / self development courses. As an idea I suppose we could at least look into what the bare bones of the policy might contain - it seems a bit new age for me but ... you never know.

National Service is more likely to take in thugs and turn out trained thugs.

Do you not think, a stint in uniform might calm down some of the asbo brigade. Lets see how they like being pushed around in the army. If they think there the dogs xxxxxx, send em to iraq, once they have proved themselves, let em come back home. Its either that or they congragate on street corners and get into trouble, causing our overworked police force more hardship trying to sort them out. If every young lout and dole scrounger were made to do, lets say 3 years, we would always have an army, and not so many gangs walking round like zombies

I agree, national service will divide the community as only non-disabled men will be forced to do it, leaving further divisions in gender roles and aliening the contribution of disabled young people,

Since the children have plenty of time.
Let them have fun under the sun and enjoy themselves before going back to civiy street.
Get them to join Boy Scout and Girl Guide they say no time.
But in making a mess in planet of apes they have plenty of time.
Why not let them all go for pinic and come home to be a man or woman in planet of apes.

I did not realise they were but it would not do any harm to some of the yobs of today. It might just teach them some respect and self discipline. If they want to play with guns and knives let them but in Afghanistan or Iraq.

national service was abolished in the u.k. in the late sixties. I do not think it is in place anymore. Holland still has it, but not the u.k.
