Americans are incredibly narcissistic as a country. And the media feeds them news focused on America and less on any other country in a positive light, and so they believe their narcisissim is justified. Look at the poster who asked "how many other countries did you see helping with the asian tsunami." American media covered America's assistance, but not anyone else's. We saw ads from former presidents Bush and Clinton asking us to send money. We didn't see ads from Tony Blair or the Japanese PM or anyone else, so Americans only know that their country did something, and don't know anything about what any other country did. (In fact all the US ever did is promise to send money, which hasn't all shown up.) In actuality over 30 countries pledged money to the asian earthquake victims. But to the average American, America is the only one on the list that matters, and deserves infinite thanks. The other commenter seems to think the US contribution was the most significant, even though it only amounted to less than $10 per person, while Australia's was over $60 per person.
It seems like this situation occurs in two types of countries; very dictatorial ones where the government runs the media (Soviet Russia, North Korea), and countries with a very large amount of people and a low number of bordering countries. Most countries see themselves as equal parts of the world, America sees itself as the most important part of the world.
The other answerer said "how many other countries did you SEE there". The word "see" is telling. America believes what it sees on its own media and if it doesn't see it, it didn't happen.

believe me, if it were up to me we'd have the Great Wall of China around us, and to heck with everyone else that hates us. I'm not a fan of Bush politics, but when i have to take the repercussion personally for it and can't do anything about it, i resent it against those who basically have hated me for nothing. I doubt that America has one ally that isn't full of backstabbers and ingrates. p.s. i didn't hear complaints when it was helping you in grenada

I don't have a clue. I don't personally know anyone getting rich, and I'm not either. Most of us aren't anywhere near rich. Guess I'm hanging with the wrong crowd here.

We don' t think that but we do come to the rescue for other countries, ex. the tsunami in Asia. How many other countries did you see over there that time.
