There were originally 6.
The size of the court is not set in the Constitution. Congress decides the size of the Court.

9 is correct and it has been as large as 12. And the President appoints the Justices, so he sets the size of the court, not Congress. And /the Senate must confirm his appointments...but not select them or their numbers.
