Hard drive "defragment" not working, help?

I want to defragment my hard drive just to try to clean things up a bit, and everytime I try it gives me this error message

"Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (C:).

Please run Chkdsk /f."

I have tried run>chkdsk / f, it gave me the option of running after the next boot. I did that, tried again, still nothing. Any help would be great.

restart pc an come back in safemode then try defragment in safe mode . to get in safe mode restart pc. keep hitting the (F8)key to you see safe mode screen then enter pc in safe mode and run defragment . when done restart pc

Try running a scan disk and then try to defrag again. Try doing a defrag in "safe mode".
