This car has only 69,000 miles on it, but the owner had a friend replace the CA carburetor with a standard one. The car will not shift into 2nd gear until 31 MPH, & will not go into overdrive until it is up to 71 MPH. What do we have to change on it to get the transmission to shift properly?? THANKS
for your help. G&M

Sounds to me like your missing a vacuum line. The C-4 and C-6 Ford transmissions had a vacuum line on them that allowed for the transmission to shift correctly. The valve is either bad or the vacuum line is missing, kinked, or bad. Other wise I would look at the kick down linkage being out of adjustment. to test this you can disconnect the kick down linkage from the carb and take it for a little test drive. If the problem has gone away you will need to adjust the linkage. Try these things and see if it helps.

Either the vacuum line to the transmission is off or the vacuum modulator in the transmission is bad. Probably just the line if it happened when someone messed with the carburetor. The line usually attaches to the bottom of the carb or a spacer between the carb and manifold.

ok this is a problem because there is no direct replacement for that carb and they are junk. it sounds like you need to find full manifold vacuum for your transmission vacuum modulator. also check that your downshift linkage is working correctly.
