Studies have shown that a certain lifestyle can prevent or induce Alzheimer's. Although there is a rumor that the Mediterranean countries have a low prevalence of Alzheimer's, this could be because the people there eat very healthy. Factors such as Vitamin E, estrogen and mental activity may prevent the development of the disease. Some studies have shown that leading an altogether healthy lifestyle (maintaining a healthy weight, good nutrition, regular exercise) as well as eating omega-3 fatty acids (fish) can enormously reduce the risk of Alzheimer's.
I can imagine the reason that Alzheimer's is so prevalent in the US is that people are just not eating healthy enough. But Alzheimer's also has a genetic component, in which case you can only do active prevention to a certain extent.
