when settlement was confined to east of the Alleghenies, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan were called the Northwest Territories.( ever wonder why the college Northwestern is in Chicago, not Seattle? That's why....) as settlers spread out, the West was anything across the Mississippi, so Ohio et al became the mid west....

When I was driving from MN to CA, I spent the night in a town called Kearney, Nebraska. The brochure in the hotel claimed it was the geographical center of the mainland U.S.

I live in Ohio, and have never heard it referred to as "the middle of the country."
Some consider Ohio to be part of the Midwest (and some don't).
I'd say Kansas was more like the "middle" of the country....

It doesn't have to be in the geographic center to be in the middle. It's just got to be between the Eastern states and the Western states.

I never understood why we are called the midwest. We are closer to the east than west.

It was in the middle when it was labeled that. Plus, it is generally in the middle politically.
