theres plenty of things, it could be a bad thermostat, a bad heater core, maybe even a bad switch on your heat/air controls. id put my money on the thermostat though

Greetings!
So if you are getting some heat, then check the anti freeze level. Low fluid level would cause a lack of heat. Mechanically the heater door may only be partially open
The expensive one would be clogged heater core.
You can remove the plastic cover in front of the passenger seat and put your hand on the fins of the core. if only some are warm than the core is clogged.
Also, if there is no heat at all, and the car does not overheat then change the thermostat to the factory spec.

Good Luck

Here are some. Plugged water hose (disintergrating inside hose), -Bad heater "shutoff valve" for water (if it has one), insufficient water, - plugged heater core, - airlocked heater (because pressure cap is bad), -inoperative heater control panel (probably due to vacuum leak ), bad vacuum module on heater "door" inside the heater box!

Most heater controls work on vacuum, if the hose breaks or leaks (or is plugged) the controls inside won't work properly (or maybe not at all!) The system opens one door and closes another, - to change form a/c to heat., -- also different doors operate to change from ducts in dash to defrost ducts. Yet another control outside turns the water control valve on and off, (most cars don't have them anymore though, as they cost extra money!)

You should be able to hear vacuum leaks if the engine isn't too noisy, it is a "sucking sound, - or even sometimes a "squeeky whisltling" sound! If the leak is big enough, it may even affect the engine at idle (too much air mixing with gas)!!

If you have hot water on one heater hose, and "not so hot" water running through the othere side, the heater core is restricted (or plugged)! You can check the heater core, - by removing both hoses (in and out), and putting a water hose on one side, - water should flow out the other side, (along with a bunch of "muck" that has built up inside the "core". Reverse sides several times, and you will flush all the impurities out of the heater core (all it is - is a "little radiator")!

If it has a control valve in the waterline, it should be hot on both sides when the engine is running, and the heater is turned on! If it is real hot on one side, and only warm on the other, there is no flow through the valve, - (it won't operate without vacuum on it!)

If the pressure cap is bad on the radiator it may not make enough pressure to push the water through the heater, - and push the air out! On some cars, the heater is a whole lot higher than the waterpump, or the top of radiator, - so it neeeds pressure to push the water around!

I'm assuming that the running temperature on engine is "normal", -- if the thermostat is stuck open, - the temperature will stay down (the colder the weather, - the cooler it will run!) The heater won't heat much if it only has lukewarm water running through it!!

Is your oil temperature getting warm enough? if not then try a piece of cardboard over part of your radiator like you see big rigs have during winter, otherwise you may have to replace your heater core element.

I would think its the thermostat that's staying open,or the heater core is blocked,or the heater control valve is not working. All possibilities. Good luck!

I would have to say the heater core with might have to deal with the water pump to but my best guess is the heater core.

there is the possiblility that you need a new heatsing unit, or your car is just old/there could be a build up in your system
