isn't it rather an extreme method of discouragement? and since it's also not true, is it ethical? (or is it one of the 'good' lies, like the one about santa?) um, sorry if i ruined someone's evening with the news about santa. i'll write you a letter to the north pole to make it up!! :)

It is a "wives tale" It is amazing how many people believe what they have heard all their lives.....Reminds me of the story about the young wife who was baking a ham for the holidays. Her husband told her she had to cut the end off the ham to put it in the pan.She asked him why. He said because his mother used to do it that way. Years went by and they asked the mother why she cut the end off the ham. She said because Her mother used to do it. Finally later they asked Grandma. "Why do you cut the end off the ham before you bake it?" She said what? Oh, yea, it was too big and I cut the end off to make it fit in the pan!!!
