For the great deal of money they think they can make. Rhino horn is much more valuable in selling than platinum; gram for gram. Sometimes it is to eat them, or protect crops and livestock from them.

In most instances, that's how they make their living in regions that offer few legitimate avenues for providing for themselves and their families. There are a few that get wealthy off of it, and a few - particularly in the US - that do it because they're ignorant rednecks.
