Abuse yes....Most dont think that they can fly from being really drunk though. The one time/first time effects of drugs are far worse than alcohol. Nice cold beer on the front porch on a hot day or sticking a needle full of heroin in your arm on the front porch?????

I am undecided on this as I do like drinking but only socially and not binge drinking and also only about once a fortnight if that.
But you are wrong about the effects being as bad as drugs. i work in probation so come in contact with alcoholics snd drug abusers every day and the effects of alcohol are much worse than drugs. They alcoholics tend to be in trouble with the Police much more often and have more anti social offences against them. They are also the ones who give us the most abuse.
We even have a few people who have been alcoholics for so long drinking on average of 5 bottles of vodka a day that hey would simply die if they stopped drinking. and at least with drugs you can wean people off with medication and drop it down gradually. You can't do that with alcohol.

Yes it should. Alcohol is registered as a poison and 7 times as many people die from alcohol abuse each week than all other chemicals put together. There is not enough room here to put in the damaging effects of alcohol. If you want more info try one of the many sites dedicated to alcohol abuse. One last thought....No-one sets out to become a alcoholic.

Alcohol seems to be rather innocuous in moderation (even beneficial eg red wine -arteriosclerosis) Wine enhances the experience of a meal.Great wines, malt whiskies, and certain beers have subtle flavours, a gourmet experience! Which is more than you can say for crack, heroin, lsd etc which are purely taken for their effect. Notwithstanding, our culture here in the UK has a rather unhealthy relationship with alcohol. Perhaps its a matter of education and example rather than legislation. Obviously children learn from example about how to behave with drink. As adults we could start by being better role-models. Drunk is neither funny or clever. And another thing!..in today's work driven, no-time society, perhaps the least physically and mentally demanding way to relax is an evening down the pub or at home with a carry out and a take-away.

Sure - it's actually worse than a lot of drugs. But alcohol has a huge lobbying power and as long as big liquor and tobacco are calling the shots, illegal drugs will still be illegal.

Fact: more people die from alcohol and tobacco use on a daily basis than any form of street drug to date the most deadly and hard to quit drugs can be bought at your local grocery store. So yes I think they should be classified as a drug.

Alcohol is a drug like caffiene, weed, nicotine, but the nanny state should do harm prevention can't control people bad habits, but you can tax booze, nicotine, and legalize weed used the tax dollars to fund treatment programs, and provide a subidsy to cab drivers willing to pick up intoxicated people at the bar.
Lower the BAC level to .05 level and make it law after any accident a drug, and alcohol test is given. People do there vices, but we need to reduce harm to innocent people thru stricter laws on driving.

Yes, the way drugs like weed are penalized despite causing very very few or even no deaths is insane whereas alcohol kills hundreds of thousands worldwide every year and nothing!

But companies don't make millions of dollars off other drugs. If destruction, harm and addictiveness had anything to do with what is legal and what isn't, then alcohol and tobacco would be illegal.

Yes the effects are just as bad. And often times more addicting than some drugs.
