All the answers previous were good. I explain it like this. You take the top of you racket and aim it at the bottom of the ball. When you swing you go up and out(brush up) so that as many of your strings can touch the ball as possible. If you take a kook at your strings after a rally and they are all over the place (moving) then you are doing it.

top spin is when you spin the ball from the top......
when you hit the ball....and go over it this will cause topspin
