The term 'Freemason' refers to a member of the Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons. The title varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Basically it is a fraternity of gentlemen. You can find out more by going to New York Grand Lodge's website and branching off through the various links. www.NYMasons.Org. Forget about Jay-Z. As a person of questionable character and having a criminal record, he is forever barred from applying.

Freemason has probably as many means as there are Freemasons. The term now applies to what we call "speculative" Masons, as opposed to "operative" masons. Speculative means that we do not actually build buildings with brick, stone and mortar. Instead, we work to perfect society by making ourselves fitting "stones" (metaphorically speaking) for the building of "the Temple of Solomon."

Freemasonry in some of its forms is merely a fraternity of good-hearted men who meet to share fellowship and do charitable deeds. Laudable actions and intent.

Freemasonry in its most esoteric (and I count the Order I belong to as probably the more esoteric of branches) is an heir to the Ancient Mystery Schools. We work to perform the alchemy of turning the lead of the heart into gold.

In American Co-Masonry, we admit women and men of all races, as along as they believe in a Supreme Being, are at least 21 (18 in some cases), are of good repute, tolerant of religions other than their own, and wish to improve the world by improving themselves.

We are not a religion but a system of morality. In other words, we make no claim as to what happens in the next life, just how best to live this one: Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

Freemasonry is a worldwide fraternal organization. Its members are joined together by shared ideals of both a moral and metaphysical nature, and, in most of its branches, by a common belief in a Supreme Being. ... Modern Age, the need for secrecy subsided, and Freemasons began to openly declare their association with the fraternity

My ex was a mason and all it means is you get two sponsors (or one, cant remember) and you become part of a fraternity that offers suport among each other. It does not mean they get drunk together away from their wives or that you have a secret organization. In university the masons hold the highest GPA, the hold the most fundraisers for community charities, etc, etc. There are some obvious requirements in order to become part of a lodge. One of them is to hold religous beleifs, the masonry group does not ask what your religous beleifs are, just so long as you hold beleif in a higher power(s). Just check out their site. Its very basic. Nothing secret about it. Nothing demonic or satanic, nothing horrible about it.

Free Masons began as a group of educated men who had the skills and knowledge to build larger buildings. Since there were few that had that set of needed abilities, they were FREE to roam throughout Europe building such things as Cathedrals.

Mason is a term for builders.

Today, groups such as the Shriners are members of the Free Mason Society.

Masons originally were slaves. So Freemasons were started as a secret society of slaves, made up mostly of brick masons enslaved because they were christian. It needed to be a secret society in order to hide the organization from the slave owners who would have killed the masons and/or disbanded the society if discovered.
