My father is in his early 60s. He is an avid coin collector, makes picture frames, makes his own matts for the frames, loves to fish, and collects antique cameras. He is very picky about the stuff he uses for his hobbies. I still need to be able to purchase him a gift.
What might be some good gift ideas?

Concerning coins, you could always buy him a nice ancient coin that depicts a fish that he can frame. I am being mostly serious. There are many ancient greek coins that depict a fish, (and many other animals). A nice coins like that, and maybe the information on the coin, would be a nice gift. You can search on www.vcoins.com for a fish coin. There is even a type of money that was in the shape of a fish, (dolphin really), in the ancient world.

If you know the places he shops, a gift card to that store is an easy out, though I personally don't like them as much as someone taking the time to try to buy something for me.

There are sets of coins that you order from a magazine that i got as a gift the last couple of years. The set contains all the new quarters for the current year as well as the new penny, nickel, dime, half dollar, and dollar. I don't think they are too expensive and if he collects coins, it is a pretty good gift.

First of all, find out what kind of coins he collects and see which ones are missing. You could buy him one of those. I have collected coins for a long time and any old nice coins are always welcome. If he likes history, maybe a Roman coin would do the trick. They are not that expensive. Have him talk to you about his collection and you will soon see what he likes or needs.

Does he usually get his coins at a particular coin shop? You could get him a gift certificate from there. If your father frequents the store often, the proprietor may even know him. He could help you make a selection of a coin that your father has shown interest in.

If you live nearby... how about making a day of it:
take him to lunch and then to a place for him to pick out
exactly what he would like for his hobbies. That way he can be
as picky as he wants, and you don't have to worry about him not using it. The time he spends with you for lunch would be a great blessing for him, too - I'm sure!
