As I understand it, the 'American spirit' has been spread around the world and Americans have tried to share this gift with whomever expressed the desire to have it. Do you believe that the would would be as free if America had never come to be?

Whatever "freedom" may mean, Holland was quite free, but this wasn't popular at the time. The Pilgrims went to Holland before coming to America, because Holland had a freer culture that would allow them to practice their religion. Unfortunately, the Pilgrims were Puritans, and didn't like Holland because it was *too* free, and the open-minded culture of Holland started to weaken the strict Puritan belief system.

A lot of people believe for some reason that America was the first free country, that it somehow invented "freedom" i.e. democracy (I suppose)... this isn't true at all. It would be a good project to examine the laws of, say 1700s England or even the colonies with the laws of 2000s USA and see which is more or less free.

Nope. Other countries are starting to learn freedom from America. Right now, some countries have no rights, no freedom of speech. However, they see how our system is working and perhaps it is encouraging the citizens of other countries to believe and stick up for themselves... everyon deserves a say. Without America taking the first step to freedom, all countries would be run by Government, most likely.

Think about it. What is freedom? Try not to take it to an extreme or oversimplify it. Try some mainstream networking like a class or discussion group in school. It is far more complicated than it seems. There are many types of democracy and freedom is still a big concept for the philosophers. But I basically agree with you.

yes, because human nature is to be free. somebody would have come up with it sooner or later.

this idea of freedom wasnt just american anyway. freewill is a basic belief in religion which sure as heck didnt start in the US.

how are so many of you this uninformed. Silverbird slavery dates back to the beginning of time not america. There really isnt many american ideas we steal from others and make them better.... or worse sometimes. hey Im realistic

Freedom... because of America... My good you should study some history.
America is the responsible for more dictatorships than what you can imagine
In places like Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, R.D, Chile, etc
Why don’t you go out of the US for ones in you life and learn something about you country.

That all depend on what aspect of it never happened. The naming of it? the civil war? The revolutionary war? The discovery of it? It all depends on what didn't happen to keep it from being.

Not really.
We'd have more freedoms, sure, but all of the rights? Would never happen.
