I was nervous before I had each of my babies, keep in mind that you can do it, and if u need to talk or want to ask me anything please feel free to look me up. I kept telling myself that this is what I have to do in order to be a mom, and that once I see my baby I will think its was worth it. And I was right, looking at them for the first time, and every time there after, made it all worthwhile. Good luck.

Nervousness is normal, but the more nervous you are, the more tense and stressed your body will be... one thing they teach in birthing classes is to focus on something you can take with you & to relax, breathe through it, have your "coach" help you with massages and reassuring words.Oh, the first babies are always a challenge, it is a fear of the unknown that we fear most of all!
I had six children, each one was totally different, but the more experience I had the better I felt about it! My labors were fairly short, my longest was 5 hours, my shortest was about 10 min.
These labors were in the hospital ... not before I was there.... so it could be different... anyway, if you have to have help with the pain, it's ok, but remember that it also affects the baby... My first born was too sleepy to eat for a few days due to the drugs for pain. It takes longer to wear off for the newborns so I never did it after the second child... the third, fourth, fifth were pretty natural! The last one I went to a midwife and could have had my baby at home! It was the 10 minute labor! That was too easy!
Don't stress, start practicing now, practice your breathing exercises, select an object to take with you to focus on... get some ice chips ready, some lip balm, and some good support!
You will be just great and so will your baby! Just promise me that you won't tense up and scream.... that is the worst thing you can do and it will make it harder, not easier to get through the birthing!

How soon are you due? I would highly reccomend reading the book "Birthing From Within" if you still have time. It worked wonders for me. Have you taken a childbirth preparation class? It is often quite helpful to explore what you are getting into with a group that will all be going through the same thing soon.
I find the Birth and Beyond Boards at http://mothering.com/discussions to be quite helpful.

I was nervous too and you have good reason. It won't be a breeze although some have easier labor than others. I didn't really hurt until they broke my water. If your water doesn't break on its own hold out as long as they will let you. Before your water breaks you can get up and walk around. If they break your water you are stuck in the bed the rest of the time. Good luck, and don't be nervous. The rewards far outweigh the pain.

Have you tried taking a child birth class? They are very informative. My wife is due Dec. 26 and we finished our class last week. I went into the classes scared of what labor and delivery will be like, but now I am really excited about it. I know it's not going to be the most pleasant experience, but being one of the first too see my daughter is going to be awesome.
Just remember that child birth is a natural process. Women are giving birth all over the world as your read this.
In summary, I'd just say inform yourself. There are tons of Web sites and several classes available to help you along. Best of luck to you!!!!

I was nervous about the birth of my son too. I had my son 6 months ago and it was worth all the pain. I was in labor for 3.5 days and they fineally did a c-section. I still want to have another child. Its the best thing in the world.

I was too. But when the time came, I was very calm. The contractions weren't as bad as I thought, but they really took a toll on my energy. That's why I decided to get the epidural. After I got it, I was able to sleep and that made a world of difference. It helped me regain my energy for the pushing phase which was the hardest part of my labor. Be prepared to hold your breath for 10 seconds three times for each contraction. That was tough for me.

Be mentally prepared for anything, and remember- they make epidurals for a reason. With my first child, I couldn't progress past a 3 (and I was on pitocin), and stayed that way for hours. Once I got the epidural, I went from a 3 to a 10 in an hour and a half, and only pushed for 10 min.!
