By making all the people on benefits work 9 - 5 on community projects, i think many of them would soon be looking for a job.
Why should they get money for doing nothing. when the rest of us have to work to pay our bills.
Obviously certain people just can't do these jobs but they could man phones for childline and relate etc. Hard earnt money should not be given away like confetti.

Good point,, Beaches, canals, the high street, our councils claim clearing chewing gum off the pavement costs thousands, give the people who are genuinly on benefits the better jobs, and the real dirty, scumy jobs should go to the benefit cheats, and the workshy layabouts who have no intention of getting a job. These clowns who steal off us every day we pay taxes should be given a 2" scraper and told to peel the gum off our streets, they should be forced, before they see a penny of there dole money, to get in canals and rescue the shopping trolleys, and once rescued, they should be made to fix them up, Our streets should be the cleanest in the world, our elderly should never have long grass ever again, our schools could be painted and cleaned, our hospitals also. How long would it be before the tired lazy dole thieving minority are begging for a real job, with real pay, and putting the polish out of work, Lets do it today, get these freeloaders off there arses, and into a pair of council issue overalls, And we can have a good old laugh at them for a change

I agree to a point. However some people on benefits are looking for a job. My brother spent 9 months on income support while job hunting. If he had been made to spend all week doing 9-5 he may never have found the £35k a year job working for BAE. Some long term unempolyed though should be made to do something for their cash.

So what are you trying to say? Do we throw out of work, those that currently do these jobs so we can employ the unemployed or those on benefit? Don't think you thought this question through!
Most if not all who receive benefit have to go through a means test before they are considered for state benefit so it's not a "give-away" as you imply. You've been watching too many movies.

I totally agree, i am sick of the people round about me on full benefit, stating they are on there own, and getting their rent and council tax paid. When in fact they also have a partner who is working, and don't declare, and go on 2 - 3 holidays a year. I think that sounds like a good idea as long as they are fit. Would exclude certain benefits like the infirm.

In the general idea you present I agree with you. Money should not simply be given to a person because they are not working. If they are able to perform some task they should be put to it. Maybe they could be custodians or work on the national parks. Something constructive.

You're right they should do more. There is not much motivation for some people to work when they can live perfectly good lives on hand outs. Fortunately most people take pride in themselves and try hard to find work but for others (not all I know!) they are just bone idle and it makes me cross that they can be given such great perks such as cheap accommodation, weekly income, free dentistry etc for spending their days doing as they please ie. smoking, drinking watching tv etc. grrrrr

Brilliant point, well done! An added bonus of your plan is that they will get into the nine to five routine, thereby allowing them to cope better when they get a job. Let's not forget they are supposed to be "seeking work" after all!

"Whip's" daycare idea is inspired!

We should have chain gang like in the U.S.of A. One of their better concepts. Dress them all in pink and let the law abiding people take the piss out of them. Oh and throw rotten fruit and poo at them as they are clearing drains and toilets.

will it offer free daycare? if not it is not really a good idea for a lot of families because then we would have kids at home with no parent... this is a problem already for a lot of people on welfare. don't get a job, can't feed your family, so you get a job, but can't afford daycare, so you leave them at home, either way the state comes in and takes the kids away.
