The Hopewell are a North American Indian culture from the Burial Mound period. This culture reached its peak between 500 B.C. to 500 A.D. They lived in what is now southern Ohio and as far as Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Kansas, and New York. The Hopewell are a prehistoric native tribe of Eastern America. Hopewell people lived and farmed along rivers and major waterways. They are best known for their burial mounds. They grew maize, beans, and squash.

Trade routes were evidently well developed, for material from as far away as the Rocky Mountains, the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic is found in Hopewell sites.

The Hopewell culture was in Eastern North America when the Adena culture was declining, and the Hopewells were declining when the Mississippian culture was starting to rise to power. The Hopewells lasted from around 300 B.C. to 400 A.D.

300 B.C. The Hopewells started to inhabit the Ohio and Illinois River Valleys. There are a couple of theories on how they got there. One was they developed from the Adena culture that was before them. Another theory is that they came from Mexico up the Mississippi River.

200 B.C to 400 A.D The peak of the Hopewell Culture was during this time. They made a lot of mounds at Ohio and Illinois. There were some mounds in the pan handle of Florida, Louisiana, in Missouri and Kansas near Kansas City.

400 A.D The Hopewell culture started to decline. Then the Mississippians became the dominant cutlture in North America. There were some theories on how the Hopewell culture seemed to vanish so quickly. Some of the theories were drought, plague, and warfare. Some of the archaeologists said that the Hopewells made made Fort Ancient, and Fort Hill to protect themselves. There is little evidence to back this theory up.
