In Nan-ch'uan's monastery, the cook monk and the gardener monk were eating when they heard a bird sing. The gardener tapped his wooden armrest, and the bird sang again. Then he repeated his action, and the bird did not sing. "Do you understand?" he asked the cook.
"No, I don't," the cook answered.
The gardener monk struck the armrest a third time.
