The act to which you are refering is called hazing. Unfortunately in the past there have been sororities and fraternities whose participation in hazing activities have lead to the death of a candidate for membership.

Now there are laws against hazing activities and most sororities and fraternities now have an Anti Hazing policy. In my sorority, prior to being offered membership, you must sign a form acknowledging the fact that you are aware of the organizations' stantz on hazing and that you will adhere to it by not participating in any non-sanctioned activities.

It all depends on where you go to school and what house you join. Where I went to school, hazing was a big no, some houses got kicked off campus for it so it wasn't done and if it was, it was something harmless. Some school choose to look away. I've heard stories of sacrificing a dog, having to model around in your underwear to have the other girls draw on your fat, having to drink an ubsurd amount of alcohol, circle jerks and other crazy stories.

I'm sure some are true and some are just there to scare you.

It's called hazing, and it only happens in really bad teen movies.
