I would say sunlight because that was the way life was created to be. The natural light will give us exactly what we need whether it be plant or otherwise. Artificial light lacks the completeness of natural light and is a substitute.

Sunlight has been adapted to by plants since plants began life on Earth. It has played a major role in evolution in the amounts of light that a plant can receive to display optimum growth. So that is why ferns have evolved to be able to live in the dark depths of a forest, while a rose must have full sunlight, and each would not grow well, if at all, if grown in each other's light requirements. Artificial light, however, must adapt to the plant, as one must choose suitable types of artificial as deemed necessary for the desired species of plant. So you could use a simple incandescent lamp to grow a philodendron (which grows huge leaves in Nature; but will grow much smaller leaves in artificial light.) But to grow a light-hungry tomato plant indoors, though, it would take the best grow-light available; even then, it would simply not reach its full potential, as only sunlight provides the full spectrum of all that is needed for photosynthesis for providing the plant with food. So if you compared it to humans, it would be like eating a fresh home-made salad from home-grown robust vegetables, or going to the store and buying a salad in a container that is at the best-before date. There would be no comparison in quality. You would still get fed, only not as well.

This depends on the plant. Some commercial greenhouses are all about the artificial lighting, and people who are in the business to grow things for money don't often make costly mistakes.
So what is "best", and why it is, depends on what you intend to actually do.

Sun provides the full color spectrum of light, artificial light can't come close to the full spectrum--even the so called "grow lights."
Also the sun's light is more intense than most artificial light. There are exceptions, of course, but everyday arfiticial light just doesn't cut it.

Plants grow best in natural light...Natural light carries more of ultraviolet light waves...besides plants are naturally in sunlight and have spent millions of years adapting to that light source
